Song Qingling and the Afterlives of the Chinese Revolution

More commonly known in the West as “Mme Sun Yat-sen,” Song Qingling led a long, complicated, and multi-layered life, and the trajectory of her experience is both unique and reflective of broader themes common among political and revolutionary women in the 20th century.

This project explores Song political career after the death of Sun Yat-sen in 1925 and the institutionalization of her image after her death in 1981. It will be the first English-language literature that seeks to place the story of her life in conversation with broader scholarship on gender, media, revolutionary mythmaking, and public memory.
